Erdeven Djess est un artiste dessinateur et autodidacte d’origine française. Ses œuvres rendent hommage aux milieux marginalisés et à leur excentricité. Elles détournent une variété d’images sociales, culturelles et traditionnelles du passé et du présent, observant la façon dont les stéréotypes esthétiques se rencontrent et se heurtent. L’artiste puise intuitivement dans l’histoire de l’art, l’industrie du divertissement et ses souvenirs de vie pour produire des récits ambitieux, énigmatiques et stimulants, qui interrogent le monde polarisé du 21e siècle. Le plus souvent exécutées sur de grands formats, ses scènes et personnages proposent une nouvelle qualité de formes baroques et maniéristes, où se lit un vif intérêt pour la représentationgender fluid. « C’est autour de la figure, des désordres humains, des désirs aussi, que se structurent mes dessins, comme autant d’images et de chaos ; elles ont ainsi la farouche ambition de se présenter « bellement » au monde – les panoplies et accessoires qu’absorbent mes personnages permettent cela. Je ne les veux ni totalement « hommes » ou « femmes », ni vraiment « enfants », ce sont mes créatures hybrides sorties d’un théâtre burlesque. » L’artiste expose ses oeuvres depuis 2009, dessinant depuis l’enfance à la mine de plomb, troquée des années plus tard contre le stylo bille, devenu l’outil exclusif de sa création. Erdeven Djess is a French-born, self-taught drawing artist. His works pay homage to marginalized environments and their eccentricity. They hijack a variety of social, cultural and traditional images from the past and present, observing how aesthetic stereotypes meet and collide. The artist intuitively draws on Art History, the entertainment industry and life memories to produce ambitious, enigmatic and thought-provoking narratives that interrogate the polarized world of the 21st century. Most often executed on large formats, his scenes and figures offer a new quality of baroque, mannerist form, with a keen interest in gender fluid representation: « My drawings are structured around the figure, human disorders and desires, like so many images and chaos; they have the fierce ambition of presenting themselves ‘beautifully’ to the world – the panoplies and accessories my characters absorb allow this. I don’t want them to be totally ‘men’ or ‘women’, or really ‘children’; they’re hybrid creatures out of a burlesque theater. » The artist has been exhibiting his art since 2009, and has been drawing since childhood with graphite, swapping it years later for the ballpoint pen, which has become the exclusive tool of his creation.
